In his speech, the Executive Chairman, Hon AbdulRaheem Olajide Jimoh was full of praise to Almighty God for His support to the athletes. He commended the Lagos State Government for her initiative on grassroots sports development which was aimed at catching them young and to develop their potentials. He described the success as Sfirst of its kind.’ Never in the history of Yaba Local Council has a set of individuals brought this type of prominence and media blitz to Yaba as far as sports is concerned.’ he asserted.

‘Hear him further:  By the singular act of these individual athletes who are being celebrated in our midst, Yaba is known today as ‘’Golden Yaba’’.’ He enjoined the LCDA to start next games preparation in earnest as time waited for no one.

More than 300 athletes from different sporting events received merit certificates and cash award of N5000.00 each, while coaches received N10, 000.00 each. The supporters club received N50, 000.00, while the technical committee received cash award of N50, 000.00.

At the occasion were the vice chairman, Mrs Bola Olumegbon, one-time Yaba chairman, Otunba Adetayo Oyemade, Mr Tunde Okusanya, leader of the legislative arm,Hon Linda Bola John and the entire legislators, members of the Executive council, National Youth organisation President, Mallam Musa Balarabe. Others are: Mr Oladigbolu, Asst. Technical Director, Lagos State Sports Council, Members of Ibile Games 2012 Technical committee, Action Congress  of Nigeria Mainland and Yaba chairmen Alhaji Quadri and Alhaji Farayola. Today, we give due praise to Allah, Subhuana Tahala for providing the requisite platform for the achievement of the unparalleled glory that our victorious sports men and women have bestowed on Yaba Local Council Development Area. Never in the history of this LCDA has a set of individuals brought this type of prominence and media blitz to Yaba, as far as sports is concerned. Today, Yaba LCDA is being described as ‘’Golden Yaba’’, courtesy our glorious sports men and women.

Aside the fact that we are the overall winners of the prestigious Ibile Cup, this avalanche of medals: gold, silver and bronze, which we garnered, is intimidating. Our sportsmen and women competed in virtually all the games and won medals in almost all of them.

Your victories in these sporting events were not fortuitous. Neither were they happen stances. They were outcome of your toil and sweat: good and consistent planning, rigorous practices, and serious self-denials among others.

There is no doubt that from the onset, you were determined, focused and committed. It was obvious you were not going to settle for anything less than success. You demonstrated inadvertently your adroit belief in the panacea enunciated by that renowned psychologist, Phillip C. McGraw. According to him, the secret of success lies in 3 words: BE, DO, and HAVE. Expanded, this says:  ‘’Be committed, DO what it takes and you will HAVE what you want’’.

Luis Seneca puts it this way: Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.’ You seized the opportunity which Ibile competition offered and availed the game of your preparation to attain success.

The reception we are holding today is being organised basically to appreciate and acknowledge your superlative performances. It is our own way of applauding you people. We are not shy to clap for you. The Yorubas have a saying ‘’Eniti a se loore ti ko dupe, bi olosa ko eru eni lo ni’’. There is another one: ‘’Yin ni Yin ni, ki eni o se mii’’. Voltaire alluded to this when he said: ‘’Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belongs to us a well’’

In order for us to push home very well our appreciation, we have made available some cash gifts which will be given out to all of you in the course of this programme. We cannot also forget to give kudos to all the officials; the coaches, medical team, members of the technical committee and also those who participated one way or the other to the success achieved by our sports men and women. We commend all of you for your painstaking contributions that culminated in this huge success that we all relish joyfully and celebrate.

As we engage in back-slapping and glass-clinking while celebrating,  we should not get carried away as we need to start preparation in earnest for next games. Some of us may think it  is still far. No! Please, remember that time is never man’s friend. We must not forget the wise saying that ‘’Achieving success is not as difficult as sustaining it’’. The success we have achieved this year must be sustained.

In his short words of encouragement with the team after the encounter, the Council Chairman, Hon AbdulRaheem Olajide Jimoh who was at the Stadium congratulated the team for getting to the final and said though they lost in the final, they have not disappointed the entire Council. He advised them to put the defeat behind them and begin to prepare for other future competition

Abidemi Afolabi, a Yaba queen received the most valuable players (MVP) of the tournament.

The Chairman announced a cash reward of Four Hundred Thousand to the entire team and the officials. Also, fifteen of the players willing to sit for G. C. E. are to receive free forms from the council and jobs to be provided for those that are seeking for  employment. Yaba lens says congratulations to our Queen.

The chairman, Hon Jide Jimoh said he was pleased to receive the coach in his office and praised him for his laudable contributions to sports development in Nigeria. He said his depth of experience could never be overestimated when it came to the game of soccer.

On the coming Junior League, Hon Jide Jimoh promised to give adequate support toward its success.  The junior league is open to people under the age 20 years and each local government is expected to raise a team in preparation for the competition.   Coach Olatunde Disu is the Technical Director, Junior League competition, Lagos State.

‘’The promotion and development of boxing sport cannot be left in the hand of government alone if the sport is to be taken to its enviable position in Nigeria, we must therefore see the development of boxing sport as our social responsibility’’, she said.

The one day boxing tournament which took place at the Mobolaji Johnson sports centre (Rowe Park) Yaba was keen and highly competitive. It was aimed at showcasing boxing prowess and talent among youths in Lagos State.

Alhaja Sherifat Hassan congratulated all the participants and charged them not to relent in their training and participation in more boxing competitions to improve their skills.

The competition paraded Joseph Badejo (10yrs), Tunde Sumade (60kg), Israel Akinola (50kg), Shina Balogun (75kg), and Bose Oshinowo (58kg) among others.
