MAKOKO COMMUNITY IN PEACEFUL PROTEST TO YABA LCDA.
The recent demolition exercise carried out at Makoko by the Lagos State Government took a different dimension as the residents embarked on a peaceful protest to the chairman, Yaba LCDA, Hon AbdulRaheem Olajide Jimoh to register their displeasure. The people came in their thousands to the council secretariat as early as 8.00am in company of their traditional rulers.
The community through their spokesman, Emmanuel Aigbe, was bitter about the way the exercise was carried out, an exercise which they said had rendered the entire community homeless. They also expressed their bitterness about the loss of one of them during the exercise.
According to Aigbe, many of them could not engage in their means of livelihood as majority of them were displaced while their children could not go to their schools as a result of psychological trauma from the exercise. He called on the chairman to come to their rescue by soliciting on their behalf with the State government for alternative place to live in so that they could continue their businesses.
In his response, the chairman, Hon Jide Jimoh, thanked the community for the peaceful protest; he commended them for not taking laws into their hands and prayed that God will give them fortitude to bear the loss of the deceased. He enjoined them to be calm in their agitation as he would do everything possible to see the governor and present their request.
