Just as the staffers of Yaba LCDA were still x-raying their experience from the knowledge acquired in the last training exercise organised for clerical officers, the council further underscored its desire to broaden the staffers’ knowledge in the art of effective communication that would enhance their performance in the organisation.

To achieve this, the council organised a two day seminar on ‘Effective Communication in a Modern Society’ for the sectional heads in the council. The seminar which took place at the AHI House, 19, Lawal Street Jibowu between 3rd – 4th May 201 was declared open by the Executive Chairman, Hon AbdulRaheem Olajide Jimoh.

In his speech, the Chairman said that communication played an important role in the development of mutual and cordial relationships within an organisation.  For any organisation to be functional and efficient in its day to day activities there needed to be effective communication. He stressed that everything within his power would be done to see that council staffs were trained in the rudiments and skills of effective communication that would enhance their efficiency on their job.

He enjoined the participants to compose themselves, be attentive and ensure that they acquired the necessary knowledge. A minute silence was observed in remembrance of Comrade Sheriff Ayinde, Yaba LCDA Nulge Chairman who the Chairman said was instrumental to the seminar.

Resource personnel at the two day seminar were Mr Peter Jide Jimoh of Lagos State University, Mass Communication Dept, Mr Abdul Mohammed Aliu, former Editor, Concord Press and Managing Director, Magnate Communications Limited and Otunba Muyiwa Ogunlaja, Director (finance and administration), Governor’s office..

Papers were presented on Basic Concepts, Principles and Techniques of Communication in a Democratic Governance, The principle of Public Relations in the development of Local governments in Nigeria and Code of Ethics in the Public Service. The seminar ended with a communiqué to the Management and certificates were awarded to the participants.

    Sounds motivating. Such workshops should be continously carried out in public parastatals especially at local levels so that internal publics I.e public sector workers can be in line with strategies and means that birth adeqaute public service delivery. Most public offices now are beginning to adopt and inculcate private sectors practices to gain the best results in their organisation. Its impressive Yaba LCDA is thinking the same way. However my main interjection is that such workshops ought to be more open, flexible and participatory between tutors and those tutored for maximum results to be gained.

    Organising a seminar to englighten employees to the need and understanding of effective communication in a public organisation ought to be carried out (especially in this context of local governance) in the most informal participatory manner for it to sink in the most. Seminars are a thing of the past. For you to champion or facilitate a learning organisation which I feel is Hon. Jide Jimoh’s aim for his administration, workshops/seminars with employees need to be more formulated inlike of an informal discussions gathering and participatory workshop. In this light, the context and contents to what is being expressed sinks in further. Classroom or speech like seminars tend to bore participants and two days is really short of a time to achieve adequate tailored goals. Organise seminars/workshops employees look forward to going to the next day or again…make it more flexible and engaging in content.

    Though, i was not there but my brother that participated in the workshop said its a participatory one which they form them into group brainstorming sections for them to arrived at a point of formulating effective organisation communication policy, action plan and a communique.

    Having read your Policy Plan on your web site I am more than convince that your plan is wel intended. I am of the opinion that each depertment need to wake up and be more serious with this plan in other to achieve it. Various stake holders should also call to support this positive plan.Governor Fashola must also support this ideals and make it mandatory for other councils to do same. Former Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Alhaja Shinatu ojikutu and Barrster Alli-Balogun accused the local Government for non- performance and the Governor, Mr Babatunde , SAN in characteristic manner repliied cleverly and constitutionally that governance is about collectivity . Hon Jide , you reallyknow what you are doing but I hope the civil severnt would not scuttle your plan. Pls be prayerful and committ your self to God for victory over the devil or agent of devil. Training and retraining is the key to success in any establishment, pls improve on this and more. Thank you.
