Lagos Speakers Cup………Yaba Jets Qualifies For Round Of Sixteen

The Lagos State Speakers cup donated by the Speaker, Lagos House Of Assembly,Rt.Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, kicked off amongst teams from all the twenty Local Government Areas and the thirty-seven Development Areas in Lagos State on the 16th of July,2009 with teams in the Lagos Central Senatorial District locking horns at the familiar Onikan stadium on the Lagos Island.

The first match saw the ever impressive Yaba Jets displaying perfect soccer artistry to the admiration of spectators.

The Yaba team which is dominated by talented ball joggers, non permeable defenders and a save goal tender dominated their lackluster opposition from Lagos Island,Keeping their opposition at bay and completely off their vital goal area, the lads from Yaba were a delight to watch as they mesmerized, overwhelm and completely outclass their less fancied opponents.

Despite dominating play, the boys from Yaba fluffed and wasted several goal scoring opportunities and refused to convert begging chances.

Luck however ran out on Yaba when the team from Island got a cheap goal, owing to a defensive blunder from the central defender.

Realising the need for a quick equalizer, the lads from Yaba, peeped up attack and with intense vivacity in the opponents vital area, the much awaited equaliser from Yaba came to the admiration of the cheering crowd.
Despite repeated forays and perpetual incursions into the goal mouth of the Islanders, they escaped by the whiskers and forced a replay that was held the following day.

The rescheduled match also saw Yaba dominate play, but after the expiration of the mandatory thirty minutes, with score line standing at a barren draw. The resultant penalty saw Yaba coming tops with by converting four out five while Islanders converted only three.

The second in the series of qualifying matches for the prestigious Speakers cup took place in the suburb of Ifako-Ijaiye, at the expansive teachers training college.

Bad fate pitched the lads from Itire-Ikate LCDA against the ever rampaging and goal hungry machines from Yaba.

The match which kicked off under a very conducive atmosphere expectedly saw Yaba dominate play with fast pace and intense attacking style.

The ever reliable and talented skipper of Yaba, Kazeem lived up to his fame and supplied vital passes with coordinated,mid-field play increasing the tempo of attack.

The good display of football artistry of the boys paid off when a goal bound move was truncated rudely by the opposing defender resulting in an award of penalty that was neatly converted .

The first half ended with Yaba leading with a goal advantage.

On resumption however, the opposition took the game to the Yaba lads and occasionally showed some good promises upfront but lack of experience denied them the much needed equaliser. The game ended on that note given Yaba a berth unto the second round.

The draws for the second round are however still been expected.
