On Wednesday the 25th day of March,2009,at the Yaba roundabout within the confines of the Tejuosho model market,Lagos stood still as a milestone was recorded in the political history of the centre of excellence,an achiever was accorded his pride of place in history,the uniqueness of the event is that this recognition did not come posthumously.
The man that all gathered to honour is an astute political juggernaut who was a vociferous voice in the fight for democracy and its sustenance.It will be recalled that it was this same man who stood resolute in the face of horrendous intimidation and assembled progressive elements to evolve a formidable opposition against military oppression,he was also very critical in his condemnation of the annulled June 12 Presidential election won by Bashorun M.K.O.Abiola in 1993.
In a keynote address delivered at epoch making occasion as part of events to mark the 57th birthday anniversary of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by the Executive Chairman of Yaba LCDA, Hon. Abdul-Raheem Olajide Jimoh, who reffered to Tinubu as a grassroot mobiliser per excellence,architect of modern Lagos,the Tutor General and grand commander of modern Nigeria politics.
While reeling some of the landmark achievements of Asiwaju Tinubu,the Jagaban Borgu and the Aare of Ile-Oluji,Hon Jimoh said,it was Tinubu who insisted on genuine democracy,rule of law and true federalism in challenging the authoritarian tendencies of Ex-Nigerian President ,Gen.Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Chairman Hon.Jimoh also commended Tinubu for helping to midwife the creation of 37 additional Local Council Development Areas in Lagos in line with the yearnings of the people despite unwarranted opposition from the central Government.
While expounding further on the rich and eventful eight year tenure of Asiwaju Tinubu he added that the Governor Emeritus took up decisive legal battles with Federal Government all of which he won ,these judicial triumph greatly enriched our nascent democracy,Asiwaju Tinubu according to Hon. Jimoh also raised the bar in infrastructural transformation in Lagos while he held sway as Governor an initiative that has been consolidated by the incumbent Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).
While speaking at the occasion,Hon.Jimoh said the beautification of the Yaba roundabout will add aesthetic value to the environment and in naming the the roundabout in honour of Tinubu while he is alive implies a bold statement in erasing the flawed tradition of recognising heroes only when they are in their graves.
The commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy affairs, Lagos State, Mr.Rotimi Agunsoye, who represented Asiwaju Tinubu, said the exploits of Tinubu from his days at the Senate and his contributions to uplifting the living standard of Lagosians and his overall contributions to the sustainance of the tenents of democracy cannot be overemphasised.He said further that Tinubus ascencion as the the Governor of Lagos State was like a watershed that clearly turned around the socio-economic face of Lagos.
He was full of praises for the initiative of the Executive Chairman Yaba LCDA, Hon. Jide Jimoh who conceived the novel idea of honouring a deserving Nigerian who is left inedelible prints in the sands of time.
The Oramiyan enigma, Engr. Rauf Aregbesola, former commissioner for works in Lagos State, who was the guest speaker at grand occasion took audience down memory lane and informed listeners present of the deep and incisive wisdom of Asiwaju Tinubu, he narrated the travails and challenges they confronted and subdued the in the face of skepticism and lack of suport from the central Government at the onset of the Tinubu Administration in Lagos.
He heldd the audience spell bound when he dug into the details of how with the rare courage of Asiwaju Tinubu and the rest cabinet members like him they brazed several odds to raise the financial profile of the state towards coping with the huge burden of providing qualitative service to make a sprawling suburb with an intimidating population like Lagos running.
He said further that the most distinct difference between Tinubu and other self professed progressives is that Tinubu would always demonstrate courage of purpose and will never betray his lieutenants, a quality most other leaders lack.
The high point of the ocassion was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the peculiar insignias of Asiwaju Tinubu moulded into his cap and eye glasses, performed by Engr.Rauf Aregbesola.
