BOB Cup Ends In Glamour
The grand finale of the annual Bashiru Omolaja Bolarinwa (BOB)Cup drew a large audience at its traditional venue,the University of Lagos sports complex, Akoka ,on Saturday, 14th,June,2009.
The football competition which is organised annually by Hon.Bashiru Bolarinwa who represents Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency at the federal house of representatives in Abuja.
The competition which is structured in the form of a knockout basis amongst the eighteen wards that constitutes Mainland Local Government and Yaba LCDA started about two months ago with preliminary round of matches taken place at the Loco pitches Nigeria Railways, Yaba,while the semi final took place at the the Railway Institute sports centre,Oke-Ira also within the confines of the Nigeria Railways at the Ebute -Metta junction,Lagos.
The well attended colorful sporting event had in attendance dignitaries such as the Action Congress leader in Lagos Mainland Hon.Olawale Oshun, Lagos State Action congress party executive members, Alhaji Danmola and Alhaji Bola Balogun, also in attendance was Hon. Olanrewaju Oshun, the representative of Lagos Mainland constituency II at the Lagos State House Of Assembly, Yaba and a host of other dignitaries who added colour to the occasion.
Events that preceded the final was the third place match that was decided between the lads from ward E in Yaba and their counterparts from ward D, Lagos Mainland local Government, the match was gallantly lost by Yaba team by a lone goal margin.A novelty match between select members of the Executives, management and legislative arms of both Lagos Mainland Local Government and Yaba LCDA also took place to allow for sound physical and mental wellbeing of Government officials using football as a tool.
The match which was full of fun and excitements had the audience spellbound,it saw Yaba dominate play and were in complete control all through the duration of the match.
To the amazement of the audience,the dazzling Executive Chairman of Yaba,Hon. Jide Jimoh scored a scintillating goal that sent the crowd roaring.
The main event of the day was the final match between the skillful ball joggler’s from ward C Yaba and their opponents from ward A in Otto area of Oyingbo, Lagos Mainland Local Government.Though largely due to a goal mouth error with a resultant free kick that was capitalised on by the Otto boys resulting in an early goal ,the Yaba Jets came back charging and got a deserved equaliser and were most unlucky to have missed two begging chances to wrap up the game in the first half.
The match which saw good display of soccer artistry mostly by the Yaba Jets went into penalty after 90 minutes of stalemate with the score line standing at one goal a piece.
In the ensuing penalty, luck stood between the Yaba jet players and the net when two of their kicks hit the pole despite clearly beating the Otto goalkeeper, they also lost one that was caught by the opposing goalkeeper.
The Mainland players however carried the day when they converted three of their kicks to leave the final scoreline at 4-3,emerging as the champions.
A giant trophy was presented to the champions from Otto in Mainland with a reasonable cash price while other consolatory prices went to the runners up and the best behaved team in the form of a fair play award and the most valuable player was also handsomely rewarded.
While given a post match analysis,Hon.Bashiru Bolarinwa promised that God willing, the 2010 edition of the BOB competition shall see a lot of added improvements.
